He was born legally blind recovering his eyesight in later years, a true gift of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Having been born in a mountain region and listening to hillbilly and gospel music during his early years, every Sunday morning he and his siblings were awakened to the sounds of "Sunday Morning Calling" a radio show of Gospel music, Bluegrass style.

When he was 13 he attended a Billy Graham Crusade meeting in Boston Gardens and gave himself to the Lord and was saved that very evening. After that, for quite some time, he would attend the Salvation Army Church and play in the band. He played the E- flat alto horn and Trumpet as well as the guitar.

At 14 he started a bluegrass and country band of his own, specializing in the old time country and gospel music. During the late 50's and early 60's Doc sang with the Ken Curtis band traveling throghout the United States and Europe as Jimmy Steele. He also worked on such radio stations as WCAT in Athol/Orange Massachusetts and WWHG in Hornell New York. He had his own TV Show on channel 24 in Elmira New York in the 50's for about two years.

In 1964 when Ken disbanded the band, Jim went to California and received a contract with a well known talent agency of that era and with a business manager and theatrical agent he toured the circuit until 1989 Under the name of Floyd James and then later, The Doc Robinson Show... But most of all he enjoys singing the classic hymns and gospel music. Serving the Lord on a daily basis.
